Quantization
also called “quantize”also called “snap to grid”
The short version
Snapping notes onto the timing grid so they're perfectly in time.
You play something slightly early or late, then quantize, and every note jumps to the nearest grid line. Most software lets you quantize partially — 50% pulls notes halfway, keeping some human feel.
Unquantized vs quantized
Same notes, same tempo. Only how close they sit to the grid changes.
What changedNothing about which sounds played — only when. Quantizing pulled each hit toward the nearest grid line. Fully quantized is the tightest; 50% keeps some human wobble.
Why you'd careFull quantization is tight but can feel robotic. This is exactly the trade-off you're working with in Fix the Beat: what's off, and does moving it help?
