The short version
Two or more sounds stacked to act as one.
A big snare is often three snares at once: a body, a crack and a room. Together they read as a single hit.
Why you'd careLayering is how you get sounds that no single sample can give you. Track = a lane, stem = a bounced group, layer = sounds glued into one.
